Dr. Gale will serve as Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology (DMI) at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, and Director of the University of Minnesota Institute on Infectious Diseases (UMIID).

In addition to current ongoing research, the Gale lab is launching multiple new projects focused on: Defining the virus and host processes that control flavivirus neuroinvasion; Revealing the roles of the RIG-I-like receptors in immune programming; Conducting Systems Biology studies to define, refine, and improve SIV/HIV vaccine efficacy; Building and testing HIV cure strategies. UMIID encompasses local and global activities in emerging infectious disease surveillance, outbreak response, public health response, and basic and translational research focused on understanding or defining pathogen-host interactions, clinical outcomes, and infection mitigation strategies. The UWARN/CREID program of UW will formally link with UMIID for research and outbreak response activities in emerging virus infection.
